IN presenting the Life and Times of vv1ll1a111 henry harrison to the public, some explanation of the title may be necessary. We have christened our work Life and Times, to distinguish it from several other books already out upon the same subject. By Times, we do not mean all the events ofthe country during the life of harrison, but merely those with which he was immediately connected.

A few reviewers have complained about the fact that this "life and times" biography of Harrison doesn't cover his (quite short) presidency. The reason for this is that this biography was actually written prior to Harrison taking office. It was written as a kind of "campaign material" for his candidacy -- it was quite common in the 19th century for presidential candidates to have a large number of biographical sketches and monographs written about them and then disseminated to gin up support and interest in these candidates.Prior to the 1870s, candidates for the presidency were not expected to actively campaign on their own behalf -- it was considered poor taste to look like you wanted to be president. Instead, individuals were nominated and would have to accept their nomination (the primaries looked nothing like they do today). After being nominated, scores of material from unaffiliated (or loosely affiliated or unofficially affiliated) sources would circulate. Media circulation looked much different, so conveying a candidate's history and biography was considered an important way of both making them familiar to voters (who had likely never seen a picture of the candidate and, often, may never have heard of them).
When you read this book, read it with an understanding that it's a type of campaign material trying to present a "voter-ready" portrait of William Henry Harrison as candidate for president. There are many things that are glossed over here and other things that are embellished. If this were an academic biography, that would be unacceptable, but these are a slightly different genre. (Still unethical, obviously, but historically interesting.)
I took off a star because this reprint doesn't do a good job of conveying any of this information (even by including original dates of publication). It's understandable that many people would think they were buying an objective biography of this president who died months after taking office. Because of this lack of context, this publication loses a star.

The Life and Times of William Henry Harrison Classic Reprint S J Burr 9781331030188 Books Reviews
Very informative, however not easy to read no flow to it. Never covered his presidential election and the circumstances of his death.. Thanks Kevin Kenney
Truly a horrendous read. If I didn't know better, I'd say this was written by a high school student. Littered with multiple over the top adjectives, you would think WHH was the greatest man to ever live. I bought it because it was only .99 for the . I'd say I overspent. If you're looking for a balanced read of the subject, look elsewhere.
It was very good. But my while purpose in buying it, was to read about his 30 day stint as president, which the book did not cover, AT ALL! When a guy becomes President of The United States of America, that seems like a tidbit worth mentioning, when writing about his "Life & Times." Just sayin'...
If the writer can get past the old-fashioned style, the book is worth reading, but preferably in conjunction with a more contemporary, fully documented and complete history of President Harrison.
